Tandaa Conference at the National Museum Nairobi

Tandaa LogoCompelling content indeed… I must confess I only managed to come for the afternoon session.

I got to watch Siri and loved the production quality.

Was a great opportunity to meet the Film Industry practitioners.

So you are a Technology Entreprenuer? – Part 1

Tech EntrepreneurYou’ve just registered your killer domain name – www.thereal.co.ke
You’ve bought the coolest design off a Template marketplace.
You’ve configured Joomla and Magento to sell ‘The Real Coke’.
You’re going be a millionaire in 6 months. Fantastic!

Sadly, you’re probably not going to break even or raise profit within the first six months. Its going to take a lot of work and the right strategies to achieve this.

Why? Cause you do not have the Entrepreneurship Mindset! An entrepreneur is an individual who organize, operate and assume the risk associated with a business venture that they establish (buy or take-over) in pursuit of an opportunity that they (and others) have identified.

Before you embark on this venture you need to ask yourself the following questions:

1. Am I the Entrepreneur? Do I understand my role?

2. Am I the Business Owner? Do I understand my role?

3. Am I the Business Manager? Do I understand my role?

4. What value can I associate with my business idea?

5. What gap am I filling?

6. Do I have the characteristics and traits associated with entrepreneurship?

7. Out of the many ideas I have, where is my passion?

8. I’m I in the right sector?

9. Where can I survive (pay my bills and pay myself) from?

10. Do I need help?

Kenya’s New Harmonised Draft Constitution & How it affects you in ICT

New ConstitutionDual citizenship
A person who is a citizen does not lose citizenship by reason only of acquiring the citizenship of
another country.

Finally people can be citizens of other countries as well as Kenya. Should see an increase in remittances.

Bill of Rights – Privacy
Every person has the right to privacy, which includes the right not to have—
(a) their person or home searched;
(b) their property searched;
(c) their possessions seized;
(d) information relating to their family or private affairs unnecessarily required or
revealed; or
(e) the privacy of their communications infringed.

The New constitution respects the right to privacy in your communications. Evasdropping is illegal. What about the security organs?

Bill of Rights – Freedom of conscience, religion, belief and opinion
(1) Every person has the right to freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion.
(2) Every person has the right, either individually or in community with others, in public or
in private, to manifest any religion or belief through worship, observance, including
observance of a day of worship, practice or teaching.

You can believe in whatever you wish. Want to join Finger of God?

Bill of Rights – Freedom of expression
(1) Every person has the right to freedom of expression, which includes—
(a) freedom to seek, receive or impart information or ideas;
(b) freedom of artistic creativity; and
(c) academic freedom and freedom of scientific research.
(2) The right referred to in clause (1) does not extend to—
(a) propaganda for war;
(b) incitement to violence;
(c) hate speech; or
(d) advocacy of hatred that—
(i) constitutes ethnic incitement, vilification of others or incitement to cause
harm; or
(ii) is based on any prohibited ground of discrimination contemplated in Article 37
(3) In the exercise of the freedom of expression, every person shall respect the rights and
reputation of others.

Critical here is the limits of this freedom. Hate websites or incitement to war / violence not allowed.

Bill of Rights – Access to information
(1) Every citizen has the right of access to—
(a) information held by the State; and
(b) any information that is held by another person and that is required for the exercise or
protection of any right or fundamental freedom.
(2) Every person has the right to demand the correction or deletion of untrue or misleading
information that affects that person.
(3) The State shall publish and publicize any important information affecting the nation.

This is gonna present a new business case. Using and analyzing this data. Start mining public data.

Bill of Rights – Consumer rights
(1) Consumers have the right to—
(a) goods and services of reasonable quality;
(b) the information necessary for them to gain full benefit from goods and services;
(c) the protection of their health, safety, and economic interests; and
(d) compensation for loss or injury arising from defects in goods or services.
(2) Parliament shall enact legislation to provide for consumer protection and for fair,
honest and decent advertising.
(3) This Article applies to goods and services offered by public entities and private
persons.

This is a game changer. Short-term increased costs but long-term better quality goods and services

THE LEGISLATURE – Right of recall
131. (1) The electorate under Articles 125 and 126 have the right to recall their member of
Parliament elected before the expiry of the term of the relevant House of Parliament.
(2) Parliament shall enact legislation to provide for the grounds on which a member may be
recalled and the procedure to be followed.

We’ve been waiting a long time for this. Recall that useless MP!

THE LEGISLATURE – Right to petition Parliament
142. (1) Every person has a right to petition Parliament to enact, amend or repeal any legislation.
(2) Parliament shall make provision for the procedure for the exercise of this right.

Churches, here you go. Petition parliament to make changes.

THE EXECUTIVE – Removal of State President by impeachment
170. (1) A member of the National Assembly, supported by at least a third of all the members, may,
at any sitting of the National Assembly, propose a motion for the impeachment of the State
President—
(a) on the ground of a serious violation of a provision of this Constitution or the law;
(b) because there are serious reasons for believing that the State President has
committed a crime under national or international law; or
(c) for gross misconduct.

Enough said.

Do you wonder why your website does not receive visitors?

Website VisitorsMany website owners spend large amounts of money creating their website yet very few people visit them.

Are you one of these? If so, the following questions and tips will improve the number of visitors to your website.

1. What is the objective of your website?
Many website owners never ask themselves this question. They set up websites cause they need a ‘web presence’. This is a very critical step in developing your E-Business strategy.

2. “My website looks great!”
Yes, it may look great to you, but who visits it? Let the professionals do their job when it comes to design. Your taste in website design are not those of your users. Listen to them.

3. Killer Content.
Copying and pasting the brochure you developed for a trade fair two years ago is probably why visitors get bored the moment they arrive at your home page. Invest in a copywriter or professional web development company to help create your Killer Content.

4. “The navigation needs to be different from my competitor!”
Your website needs to be accessible and navigable by your visitors. Using a non conventional, almost esoteric navigation style is no way to help them guide through your website. If it works don’t fix it.

5. “I need the latest features on the website! It must be futuristic and bleeding edge”
Technology is but a tool to realize business objectives. Remember technology for technology’s sake serves no ones’ interests. Especially yours! Keep it simple, functional and smooth.
